After being a “serious runner” for about 15 years (last 3 have been on and off, mostly off), I finally bought myself a GPS watch. I’m still on the fence about if it will be a useful tool or not, especially at home. I know the distance to most my local loops, and even some places out of town. If I don’t, I am pretty good at estimating or logging into map my run to plan out a course. Also, I have a pretty good internal speedometer (paceometer?) so I typically know how slow I’m going.

All that being said, I am a nerd and I do like data. I’ve ran twice since I’ve gotten it and it’s been a fun new thing to play with. I went with the super basic forerunner 35 (close enough to 4runner to make this car related). I really want the super high end 945 for its built in maps and turn by turn directions. This will be super handy when I’m traveling again and go for a run in a foreign land. Alas, that will not be happening for a while, and a scored a great deal on this watch since it has recently been replaced. If I end up liking it, I’ll snag the high end watch when it goes on sale.

Anyone else on here run with a GPS watch? What are your thoughts and has it actually helped improve your training? I am to the point where I’ll prob never PR again, but I think the data will at least keep me engaged.

Best I can do is Rolex, I’ll provide the Rolex, you provide the Ferrari.

My wife has the same watch, she really uses the features and Garmin Connect gives you good data. You should also get a strava account so you can see segments and pacing if garmin connect doesn’t provide that info.

I think her only criticism is the HRM is not very accurate but I think only a chest strap is going to give you accurate heart rate info.

I run with an older Forerunner 225. It’s not fancy, but it gets most of the data I want. It’s been 10 years since I ran a PR and I’m getting old enough that I expect a constant decline. I mainly like it for long runs and trail runs. I’m mainly interested in distance and elevation. I don’t trust it for heart rate.

For long runs and tempo runs , the GPS makes it easier to track my pace. I prefer to use an existing measured course or track for speedwork rather than the GPS.

Ive got a forerunner 245 and so far its been pretty great. For me the heart rate seems pretty accurate as long as I have it on nice and snug. I always tighten it up 1 or 2 notches over my normal comfort wearing when I start running.

All the extra calculated values it does are neat, but of course not super accurate. Mine vastly overestimates my times, and probably my VO2 max. But I think its because my run always started on a long downhill when it was measuring those metrics. But seem good enough for getting idea for trends.

Overall I think it has been worth it. Helps me gauge my effort with the HR (even if it isn't absolute correct, it definitely seems correct relative to itself for showing comparative efforts). Also was nice not needing to bring my phone on every run. Although there's safety issues with not bringing a phone.

I am OK with this plan haha

I downloaded the strava app too. I like them both so far, but only time will tell if I use either. I *think* the HR monitor does an ok job, just based on a few resting hr checks I’ve done and perceived effort. At least it’s something haha

As long as it is consistent with itself and has pretty accurate distance, that is really all you need, imo.

I have never ran with my phone but a friend of mine mentioned he always takes his for safety. I hate carrying things with me (I didn't even wear a watch for the longest time) but I normally ran with another person on long runs. I guess I should think about that as I'm doing long runs by myself due to covid. I did twist my ankle slightly about 4 miles from my truck last night. That wasn't fun but at least I made it back ok.

Agreed for speed work. This is mostly for tracking long runs and kind of a just a neat thing to track pace. Seems to be doing fine for that. It seems like all of their watches hold up pretty well but only time will tell
